Welcome to London / tea recommendations

Now that Wally has moved back to the Boston area (much to the delight of a certain quilter who shall remain nameless), he's wondering what exactly is going on with the weather here. What's with all of the rain? Seems like every day it rains. Global warming? Bad luck? Is Boston the new Seattle?

It does, however, make excellent tea-drinking weather. Here are two recommendations from Wally, both available at Harney & Sons (www.harneyandsons) in Millerton, New York:
  • Earl Grey Supreme - his benefactor's favorite tea of all time. Excellent tips. An excellent afternoon tea (or after dinner, if you are caffeine-insensitive).
  • Eight at the Fort - "June 20-27, 1997, marked a special time in world history. President Bill Clinton of the United States and seven other world dignitaries met at The Fort in Denver for a world peace meeting. We were quite honored to be asked to create a special blend of tea to be served to the world leaders at their summit. Imagine the busy luminaries pausing just long enough to sip this special blend of eight teas. This is one of the most historic blends we have created." This gets Wally going in the AM after a night game.
  • Bonus recommendation: Queen Catherine, which Wally has nicknamed Queen Caffeine. Wally's Aunt CHG likes this one too.

Wally recommends that you visit Harney & Sons' tea room this summer - have lunch and do some tastings. If you like tea you won't be disappointed.

  • Dear Wally,

I too love the Harney's Earl Gray Supreme. And they make a lovely sandwich to accompany your tea. I'm putting my tea kettle on right now....

Speaking of tea and, of course, thinking of bike riding, I have an important etiquette question to ask. When drinking tea while bike riding, is it necessary to raise your pinkie finger. And what, pray tell, does one do with the tea bag? These are vexing questions for me. I await your answer.

  • Fuzzy (I assume this refers to your pets, not your pits):

Keep all hands on the handlebars at all times, since if you crash you can break your collarbone and suffer a concussion, not to mention be off the bike for a sustained period of time. DO NOT brew your tea while riding, particularly if you are using loose tea and a strainer.

Also, drinking fine tea is best left to sitting or lounging, since bike bottles do not properly capture the fine flavor of a EGS or other such delicious tea. I recommend drinking tea in the Berkshires.

Yours in tea and green monsterness,

    Wally
