Wally is recovering from a very exciting Tour de France and is apparently back to the blogisphere. He hopes everyone saw Floyd Landis' exciting breakaway stage win on Thursday, which propelled Floyd to a win in the GC (a/k/a winning the whole enchilada) on Sunday. How did he do it? According to a report in the New York Times, it may have been a substance that is not banned by WADA:
Floyd Landis has made many adjustments to life outside the Mennonite community where he grew up. Notably, he likes beer. On the way down from the summit of L’Alpe d’Huez last week, Landis, hot and exhausted, wanted a beer. So he had the team car stop at a group of partying fans, with whom he traded one of his coveted race leader’s yellow jerseys for a six-pack.
Beer emerged as a topic twice more with Landis on the Tour. After he won the 17th stage to Morzine with his much-noted attack, one day after losing nearly all his energy on the climb to La Toussuire, it was noted that Landis spent much of the stage with a water bottle in his hand, drinking steadily and pouring water over his head.
Asked about the water, he noted that it was very hot, then added, “or maybe it was just the beer I had last night.”
And at a news conference Saturday after he secured the yellow jersey a final time with a strong performance in the time trial, Landis was asked by a French reporter if he could say a few words in French.
“Merci beaucoup, café, bière,” he said, using the French words for coffee and beer. “That’s how I get by in France.”
